At Tides Turn Transformation, I aim to help you navigate the tides of your life, respecting the challenges and embracing the beauty of personal growth and transformation. Just as the Ocean can change its tides, you too can turn the tides of your life and achieve the fulfillment and joy you seek.
Growing up in a large family with two working parents, I was the oldest child and naturally took on a lot of responsibility. From an early age, I learned that doing well and being a "good boy" was crucial to earning praise, which I equated with love. This belief shaped much of my early life—striving to excel, manage the house, and please adults. Praise and love were earned through people-pleasing and perfectionism.
Despite my achievements, uncertainty often plagued me about where I belonged—whether with friends, at school, or in life. I believed that maintaining success and hiding weaknesses would ensure acceptance. Emotions were private matters, and I wore masks like the "Rock", the "People Pleaser", the "Yes Man", and the "Nice Guy." These shields protected me but isolated me from my true self and others.
As I matured, I recognized this as a common experience, particularly among men. Counseling and therapy weren't part of my upbringing, and discussing feelings was uncommon—men were expected to be strong and self-reliant. These outdated beliefs were ingrained, driven by childhood notions of protection.
A turning point came when I realized the toll of these defenses on my relationships. I delved into self-discovery, reading extensively on personal growth and emotional intelligence. Opening up about my feelings allowed deep connections, fostering mutual understanding.
This journey emphasized the importance of authenticity and vulnerability. I learned that being open is a strength, not a weakness. By listening attentively rather than problem-solving, I discovered the power of genuine connection.
Enhancing my listening skills transformed my interactions. Feedback became opportunities for growth rather than discomfort. Over my 25 years in corporate management and coaching, I've seen the impact of active listening on team dynamics and individual fulfillment.
